the people that you meet when you’re walking on the street, part 2

I’m not up on my Talmudic law, but did something change recently and woman are wearing yarmulkes?

I rode up in the elevator with a woman who had a yarmulke clipped to the top of her head.

Heh. Well, I went to a BatMitzvah once, and there were yarmulkes on a table for guests…we (girls) put one on since we thought we were supposed to. A sweet old lady informed us that we only were supposed to if we were widows. That may explain what you saw?

Yes. But the change in custom has been happening over the last 20 or so years. Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist women routinely wear a yarmulke (and tallis) at synagogue. But it’s more unusual for an American Jew who isn’t Orthodox to wear a yarmulke in public life. I bet the woman you saw was probably a rabbinical or cantorial student.

Wow, I’m a winner. I’ve read this post about three times, trying to figure out what a yar-mulk is.

The owner of the Seattle Supersonicahs celebrates Chanukah, so I thought it would have had to be spelled Yamika.
