ten (not-so-)random songs

Via KB: the first 10 songs, at random, from my mp3 player:

6. Tommy Guerrero - Organism
7. King Crimson - Red
8. Hot Tuna - Hesitation Blues
9. Dizzy Gillespie - Minor Walk
10. Chris Smither - Dust My Broom

Hrmmm…somewhat random: jazz, rock, jazz, jamband/jazz/rock, americana, electronica/groove, prog rock, blues, jazz, blues.

ok, maybe not all that random…

I wanted to try it again:

7. Emily Remler - Softly As In A Morning Sunrise
8. Percy Hill - 313
9. Gerardo - Rico Suave
10. Howard Riley and Keith Tippett - Interchange

hrmm… jamband/rock, electronica/groove, jazz, jazz, avant-garde jazz, rock, jazz, jamband/jazz, cheese, avant-garde prog rock

Horace Silver, Joe Henderson, and the Counting Crows all making a second appearance! Horace Silver makes up 1.6% of the sample set, and was selected 10% of the time; Joe Henderson makes up 1.3%, selected 10%; Counting Crows makes up 4%, selected 10%.

Emily Remler makes up 5% of the collection and was select 5% of the time!

Notably left out: The Vandermark 5 (5% of the collection, selected 0%), Radiohead (4.7% of collection, selected 0%), Ornette Coleman (4.3% of collection, selected 0%)

ok…because I am a geek, I decided to expand the music collection, from 297 to 763 files.

First 10:
1. Ahmad Jamal - Stompin’ at the Savoy (0.1% of collection/jazz)
2. Groove Collective - Skye (1.8% of collection/groove)
3. John Patitucci - Out Of The Mouths of Babes (2.3%/jazz)
4. Counting Crows - Sweet Home Alabma (2.4%/rock)
5. Robbie Schaefer - Woman of Faith (3.6%/folk)
6. Dave Matthews Band - Penis Song (0.6%/jamrock)
7. Louis Armstrong - I’m Gonna Gitcha (3.2%/jazz)
8. Joe Pass - Stella By Starlight (1.5%/jazz)
9. Bill Evans - My Foolish Heart (2.2%/jazz)
10. Pink Floyd - Bike (0.1%/psychedelic rock)

Second 10:
1. Louis Armstrong - Big Fat Ma And Skinny Pa (3.2%/jazz)
2. Robbie Schaefer - Bones of a Lifetime (3.6%/folk)
3. Counting Crows - Recovering the Satellites (2.4%/rock)
4. Led Zeppelin - Houses Of The Holy (0.2%/rock)
5. Dave Matthews Band - American Tune (0.6%/jamrock)
6. John Coltrane, Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Burrell - Minor Mishap (0.6%/jazz)
7. Medeski, Martin & Wood - Beshma Swing/Lively Up Yourself (0.1%/jazz)
8. Joe Henderson - Blue Bossa (0.5%/jazz)
9. Counting Crows - Goodnight Elisabeth (2.4%/rock)
10. The Vandermark 5 - Both Sides (for Budd Johnson) (2.1%/avant garde)

Ok! the fix is in!! Counting Crows 15% of the time!? Louis, Robbie, and Dave pulling down 10% each?! And Joe Henderson returning with the same song from the previous test!

Notably left out: Art Tatum, 30 tracks, 3.9%; Rev. Gary Davis, 24 tracks, 3.1%;
Miles Davis appears in at least 6% of the files and didn’t show up once!

Yes…I’m a geek…

This makes me sound so cultured; I want to be absolutely clear that I have my fair share of Ricky Martin alongside the Shelby Lynne and Charles Mingus.
