jamesmt and the giant peachlicense
you’ve read it elsewhere, and honestly, I’m not involved enough to even try to make a strong argument for or against the new MT3.0(for fee). Yes, development time costs money, and yes if you offer something for free on an honor system, people will take advantage of it. But, there is a huge downside: the alienation of the small customer.
I work for a company that offered a few free online services to teachers, and recently we went “for-fee.” The geniuses in the marketing department predicted a 25% adoption — 25% means that 75% of our customers would leave. The final result: 8%!!! Ouch!
Who would have thought that the teachers would be some angry at us for asking for money? Oh…not me…
A sidenote: the latest version of non-3.0 MT is still available: http://www.movabletype.org/download.shtml. If that stops working, let me know…I have the files.
I figure, I don’t use MT to the fullest, and most people don’t either, so why upgrade?

What I really don’t like is them taking down all prior versions of MT. I wanted to snag the upgrade files for 2.66 and didn’t get them in time. Now I’m stuck using the version I had because I refuse to pay that much money for something that I do for a hobby. I hope they don’t end up shooting themselves in the foot over this one.
