you mean the tickets I just sold for the showing in my backyard are no good?
so…I’m watching TV, and a commercial comes on for the latest Hollywood remake-of-a-film-that-didn’t-need-remaking; the end of the commercial: “Starts today, in theaters only.”
Where else would it start? The supermarket? Town hall?
Has a movie ever come out on video first — like a week or two early — and then the theater?

These days, yes. There’s been about a half-dozen films (minor) this year that started on DVD, then went to theaters. The one I can immediately think of is “Outfoxed”, the documentary about Fox News.

My other personal favorite is the tag “Now playing in select theaters.” Why not just say what you REALLY mean: “The rest of you scumbags will have to wait for this one to make it to your one-horse town.”
I’ve never had the pleasure of living in a “select city” — even Cincy was too small for that distinction. Grr.
