Bush to push Americans to cut energy use — Americans to push Bush to stop winter altogether

I’m all for energy conservation, but I don’t believe for one second that this new campaign to encourage people to use less to save more will amount to anything but a bulletpoint that the adminstration can point to when they are accused for not doing anything.

Conservation as a lifestyle takes months, if not years, to truly embrace and put into action. Asking people to change some light bulbs and lower the thermostat (or replace it with a new digital one) will bring about two things: people complaining about the new, higher costs of saving a little energy, and normal light bulb companies complaining that they’re losing business.

For consumers who warm their homes with natural gas, their winter costs would be 52 percent higher nationally from last year, according to the Energy Information Administration.

The Energy Department’s analytical arm forecast heating oil expenses would rise 34 percent and electricity bills would be up 11 percent.

Great! If I wanted to be anally raped I would have robbed a bank and been sent to jail! At least I wouldn’t have to pay for the heating bills!!

One radio spot also encourages consumers to install sufficient insulation in their homes and use a programmable thermostat to lower winter heating bills.

Our house is 105 years old, and has zero insulation. Having the house insulated is on the top of our list of things to do, but as with everything when you own a house, other things always pop up. When I priced out back in the Fall of 2003, I think it was going to cost “no more” than $3500! Does the Energy Secretary have a plan to stop the insulation company from gouging me when I go to them on the heels of this announcement? Probably not…

You know complaining about the lack of insulation in a 105 yr old house is like owning an SUV and complaining about how much gas it uses. :-P

well…I don’t know if I’m complaining about the lack of insulation, or the lack of disclosure about the lack of insulation. I guess I figured that someone before us would get around to doing it…
