we’re going streaking!

so…I’ve got a big problem with the way baseball deals with the statistical idea of “consecutive.”

After yesterday’s Oakland A’s batting practice — I’d call it a Red Sox game, but the word game implies competition, and the Sox haven’t been competing since August started — they we’re talking about the fact that Curt Schilling has gone winless in his last 5 starts. Ok. They followed that up with the fact that the last time that happened was some like 9/15/02 - 4/16/03.

Last time I checked, there are a few months in there where Schilling wasn’t playing baseball. Can you really say that those are consecutive games? I mean, did he not pitch during spring training? And even so, how many factors could have changed during that time? He could have put on some weight. His team could have had some major roster changes. All sorts of things could have affected the outcome.

and what about Jimmy Rollins? He ended the 2005 season with a 36 game hit streak. He’s in the record books as having a 38 game hit streak because he had hit in each of the first two games of the 2006 season. Ummm…how the hell is that a consecutive streak!? Once again, what about spring training?

By baseball’s logic, I have been awake for 11316 days.

Man I am tired!
