the one where I’m still rubbing the sleep from my eyes

so…I like to read the local paper on the train in the morning. Well, “like” might be an overstatement. I don’t really “like” our local paper, but I also don’t like that we can’t get any other source of news from the Boston outlets even though we are the 4th largest metro area in the state.

Our entire paper has fewer pages than most sections of the Boston Globe.

Anyway, given the low number of pages I always have the time to read the paper cover to cover AND post enlightening ans insightful things here for you to enjoy (it might be in your best interest to write to the Lowell Sun and beg them to double the length of the paper).

Today I saw something oddly disturbing: DIVORCE SUMMONS BY PUBLICATION.

Actually, I saw two of them.

Is this actually enforcible action? Can the defendant be held to the dates in the summons without knowing about them?

Each summons also carries a restraining order to prevent the defendant from negatively impacting the financial situations of both parties. Can that be enforced? Can the defendant be held liable for going on a financial bender or making a “wise” investment in paper rain hats or losing their job?

It just seems odd that a divorce decree could be seved on the idea that someone’s loved one might see it in the paper and tell them.

It’s like a twisted “Second Chances” or “Missed Opportunites” personal ad.
